Stay with the descendents of Borneo’s legendary headhunters
The descendents of Borneo’s legendary headhunters, the Iban Dayak, are thankfully much friendlier these days. During your overnight stay in a traditional Iban longhouse, you’ll be welcomed and immersed in an extended family community living under the one roof. The Iban have successfully intertwined their cultural heritage with the modern and enjoy sharing their dancing, music, games and food with guests. This may include imbibing the local throat-tearing rice wine, tuak, with the feather-decked chief and his family, and chatting with the smiling, sugar-and-soot tattooed elders about the old ways. However, the festive, egalitarian nature of the Iban means a drink is not necessary for them to get you up and dancing to the sounds of frenetic drumming and gamelan, nor for everyone to bed down on reed mats and locally woven blankets for the night.
