Strike it lucky in Pilgrim’s Rest, South Africa

History feels alive in Pilgrim’s Rest, a little town nestled in the folds of the part of the Drakensberg Mountains known to locals as the Escarpment. The entire place is a National Monument, in memory of South Africa’s Gold Rush days. It’s postcard-perfect, prettified and preserved so that an imagination isn’t even needed to visualise how the original diggers lived. So there’s only one thing for it – do as countless others have done before you – hire a pan and be ready to strike the motherlode.
