Tibetan rural life and the Kumbum Monastery in Gyantse
The ancient fortress town of Gyantse offers a rare and beautiful glimpse of Tibetan rural life. Most Tibetan political leaders hail from here, where the influence of Han culture has yet to take firm root, and the locals are strongly Tibetan and proud of their traditional dress, rituals and customs. Visit Kumbung Monastery and see Buddhist murals and Tibetan monks deep in practice, or interact with other Tibetans in the streets. Many carry prayer wheels with which they ‘make merit’, obtaining favour for the next life as they go about their daily business, and you’ll be snapping away and smiling at your own good fortune for experiencing a town so steeped in the spiritual.
