Nazca is a pleasant town to explore – a neat little square, appealingly ramshackle market, and some great places to while away evenings in. But, nice though it may be, you’re not here for the town. The Nazca Lines, those extraordinary motifs in the desert, are the centre-piece of any trip to the area, a veritable world of giants and unfathomable mysteries. It’s safe to assume this is the only place you’re likely to see a 100-metre long spider squatting near a King Kong-sized monkey, while the world’s largest hummingbird rests close by. The source of a thousand theories and pub arguments about the figures’ purpose; whatever that may be, these geoglyphs rank as one of the world’s oddest and most enigmatic spectacles.
