UNESCO World Heritage-listed Petra
Hidden in the folds of sandstone hills, the iconic image of Petra is of a narrow cleft in the hills opening up to the glorious façade of the Treasury. What is surprising about visiting Petra is the enormous scale of the city - there are over 800 registered sites here. That means there is ample opportunity to find your own peaceful corner, to marvel at this city hewn from stone, cut into rock. The beautiful Monastery, an hour’s hike from Petra’s centre, and the immense Urn Tomb are highlights deserving of close inspection. And for a stunning view of the site, and the surrounding countryside, be sure to walk to the High Place of Sacrifice. Walk the sinuous Siq, see the Treasury, then hunt out your own Petra.
