Whisky on the rocks, Shackleton style
Early in 2010, five crates of brandy and whisky were recovered from the ice beneath Shackleton’s hut. Identified as that of the original supply for his first expedition, this liquor is the dream drop for those wishing to mull over story-steeped Antarcticawith a glass in hand. The actual drop may be hard to get your hands on, however, but expect a ‘Shackleton’s Reserve: Spirit of the Explorer’ sometime soon; the original distilleries intend to analyse and perhaps reproduce their century-old blends.
On your own polar expedition, why not tinkle a few cubes of polar ice through a less aged drink instead? Fish out a chunk of crystal clear ice when heading from shore to ship by Zodiac and this 10 000 year old freeze with give a good crackle and cool to your drink. Sip and think of your own wonderful Antarctic experience and the spirit of explorers long past.
