The White Desert's limestone formations
Unlike anywhere else you’ve been, or will ever go. In between two of Egypt’s oasis towns, the wind has whipped and beaten chalk monoliths into a succession of mind-boggling sculptures that leaves visitors at turns standing in open-jawed wonder and laughing at the surreal landscape in front of them. Clearly, the world has taken leave of its senses here: a Dali sketchbook of clouds harnessed to the earth, petrified explosions, coral reefs, a chalk zoo of hawks and camels, chickens and ostriches, and the biggest mushrooms you’ll ever lay eyes on. And ‘white’ doesn’t even begin to cover it: gold in the midday sun and a deep purple come sunset, this is a staggering, utterly bewitching part of the world.
