Zipaquira’s underground salt cathedral

Zipaquira’s underground salt cathedral

It started in the 1930s. Miners constructed a small sanctuary for their daily prayers. From these beginnings, Zipaquira has become home to something unique and extraordinary – its underground salt cathedral. 14 chapels lead you to the grand dome and on to the cathedral’s naves, all carved from salt and some 60 metres underground. The purple-blue lighting adds to the surreal, reverent atmosphere – above ground, this would be an intelligent, interestingly designed church, in Zipaquira it’s a dazzling subterranean expression of faith that really needs to be seen to be believed.
