Embrace your inner hippy in Kathmandu, search for Bengal tigers at Chitwan, check out Buddha’s hometown, fall in love with Varanasi, ogle at the Taj, hang in a palace at Tordi Garh, go bazaar mad in Jaipur and finish up in Delhi.

 

Once you hit Jaipur you'll be sharing the sidewalk with kids, cows, rickshaws, chai wallaws, street food vendors, stray dogs and about 3.1 million other people. Watch your step.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1-2: Kathmandu

Accommodation: Hotel Shakti or similar, Kathmandu

Embrace your inner hippy in Kathmandu. Order a plate of fried momo, practice some yoga, get a massage, marvel at the Bodhnath Stupa and use this time to reset your body clock

Day 3-4: Chitwan National Park

Accommodation: Royal Park Hotel or similar, Chitwan National Park

Explore the jungle, searching for Bengal tigers and the Indian rhinoceros. It's basically The Jungle Book come to life.

Day 5: Lumbini

Accommodation: Lumbini Budha Garden or similar, Lumbini

Buddha lived here until he was 29. In that time he founded Buddhism. What have you done lately?

Day 6-8: Varanasi

Accommodation: Hotel Surya or similar, Varanasi

Watch thousands of Hindu pilgrims cleanse their sins in the Ganges as you take a boat ride at sunrise. We won't lie, it's pretty moving stuff.

Day 9: Agra - Taj Mahal

Boyfriends take note: Emperor Shah Jahan spent over 20 years building this shrine to his second wife. How long has it been since you've bought anyone girlfriend flowers?

Day 10: Tordi Garh

We stumbled across this tiny village years ago, and everyone loved it so much we put it on the itinerary. The kids will adore you, the locals will feed you and you'll go to sleep in a 16th century palace.

Day 11-12: Jaipur

Accommodation: Hotel Mrignayani Palace or similar, Jaipur

Haggle to your heart's content in the bazaars and backstreets of the Pink City. Jaipur is famous for textiles (think table runners and made-to-measure suits), precious and semi-precious gems and blue pottery.

Day 13-14: Delhi

Accommodation: Hotel Perfect or similar, Delhi

Watch one of the world's greatest shows unfold as people, traffic, cows and kids all work together in a kind of organised chaos. Grab a chai, put your feet up and let it all soak in.

• Sightseeing (including entrance fees where applicable): Kathmandu including Bodhnath Stupa and Pashupatinath; Lumbini including temple complexes, Ashoka Pillar and Maya Devi Temple; Varanasi's back lanes and crowded alleyways; Agra including the Taj Mahal; Jaipur including Amber Fort, Old Bazaar and The Palace of the Winds; and Delhi including Chandni Chowk and Connaught Place.

• Morning boat ride on the Ganges to witness the rituals on the ghats.

• Royal Chitwan National Park – lodge accommodation and entrance fees.

• Off-the-beaten-track experience in Tordi Garh – village walk, a visit to ruined temples and a fortress, and a jeep safari.

• Overnight accommodation in the 16th Century Tordi Palace .

• Free time to explore Kathmandu, Chitwan National Park, Agra, Jaipur and Delhi.

• Overnight train from Varanasi to Agra. Accommodation air-conditioned sleeper class with three-tier sleeping berths (two sheets, a blanket and a pillow provided per person).
