Cairo Cairo
My Pharaoh Lady

Cairo is one capital that makes no excuses for itself. Once you’re feeling at home, we make for Aswan. Catch a Nile felucca to Luxor. Walk like an Egyptian in Alexandria (groan…). Camp out in the White Desert. Abu Simbel and Luxor Temple if you wanna.

Bawiti locals claim their spectacular cache of Golden Mummies was uncovered by a donkey's hoof. We hope the donkey got an extra lump of sugar that day.

Please note the departure on 3 January 2015 is operating on an alternative itinerary. Please see important notes for further details.

My Pharaoh Lady

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1-2: Cairo

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 dinner

Welcome to Cairo: traffic jams, heat, pollution, 20 million people, hubbub, cacophony, noise. You'll love it.

Visit the pyramids & the Sphinx (optional)

Visit the Egyptian Museum (optional)

In the evening, board a sleeper train for an overnight journey to Aswan

Day 3-4: Aswan

Meals included: 2 breakfasts

It's not hard to slip straight into holiday mode in Aswan, a laidback town nestled on the Nile (big river, you might've heard of it?). Join a local Nubian family for dinner at their place.

Hit the bazaar, check out the Nubian Museum or take your pick of optional activities. Ride a camel. Go see what an unfinished obelisk looks like.

Day 4

Optional visit to Abu Simbel temple complex

Day 5: Nile felucca

Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner

Chill out aboard a felucca, with the wind in your sail pushing you steadily downstream. Sleep out on deck under a squillion stars. It sounds like a cliche, but we don't care. It's as good as you're imagining.

A felucca is a traditional wooden boat with canvas sails. A canopy offers shade and protection from the elements, however there is no cabin or enclosed section.

Even though conditions are basic, if you're prepared to rough it a bit you'll be fine.

Sleep on mattresses on the deck. While blankets are provided, a sleeping sheet is recommended. During the colder months (October to March) it can get very cold at night (as low as 5C) so a sleeping bag is highly recommended. Sleeping bag hire is not available.

There are no toilets on board our Nile felucca, but while sailing we'll stop at your request on the riverbank for toilet stops with nature.

At the end of a day's sailing we'll assemble a western-style toilet and tent on the riverbank. Any assistance from the group in building the toilet tent is always much appreciated.

We might need to make slight alterations to our Nile itinerary throughout the year, depending on winds and currents. As the felucca is a sailing craft without any outboard engine, if there's no wind - we won't travel very far.

Day 6-7: Luxor

Meals included: 2 breakfasts, 1 dinner

Remember when history class at school was like eating brussel sprouts? Not this time. Feel Egypt's ancient history come to life at Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings. (optional)

Visit the Colossi of Memnon and the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut on the West Bank (optional)

Optional visit to Luxor Temple

Free time to check out the market in Luxor town.

Day 8-9: Alexandria

Meals included: 2 breakfasts

It all feels a bit more European than Egyptian here. Explore Alexandria's Corniche along its Mediterranean waterfront then enjoy an espresso at a sidewalk cafe and watch the world go by.

Check out the Roman catacombs or drop by the Biblioteca Alexandrina

Day 10-11: Siwa Oasis

Meals included: 2 breakfasts

After driving through desert dunes 'til you feel like you might actually reach the end of the world, Siwa's oasis suddenly appears. It's like the Garden of Eden. Alexandra the Great came here to consult the oracle, Cleopatra came to take a bath; you've come just for the hell of it.

Stop by the Mountain of the Dead

Walk in Alexander's footsteps at the Temple of the Oracle

Take a dip in Cleopatra's Pool

Day 12: Bawiti

Meals included: 1 breakfast

A bit like China's Terracotta Warriors, Bawiti locals claim their spectacular cache of Golden Mummies was uncovered by a donkey. Clever ass.

Travel by 4WD, crossing the Great Sand Sea

Day 13: White Desert Camp

Meals included: 1 dinner

This is a camp. In the desert. We bet $20 you haven't done that before. If you have, don't ruin it for the others.

It's as dry as an old Arab's fart and has weird rock formations

Spend the day exploring both the Black Desert and White Desert on a jeep safari

Spend the night under the stars, no tents and the toilet is simply a hole dug in the sand. Conditions will be basic. We highly recommend that you bring a sleeping bag as it can get particularly cold in the winter months.

Day 14: Cairo

Meals included: 1 breakfast

Back in Cairo, put your bargaining skills to the test in Khan el-Khalilli Bazaar, where you'll find that must-have papyrus painting or that scarab pendant you've always wanted.

It's about a 5-hour drive back to Cairo and no activities are planned, so the rest of the day is free for you to explore the city further

Head for the atmospheric old streets of Islamic Cairo.

Day 15: Cairo

Meals included: 1 breakfast

The tour ends after breakfast this morning, which means you've got from the time you wake up and the time you finish breakfast to spend the rest of your money.
