Head from Cairo to Alexandria and check out the museum, hang at El Alamein or the Quaitbey Fortress, explore the bazaar on Nokrashi Street, drink things, eat seafood, live the sweet life, drive back to Cairo and you’re done.
Alexandria is Egypt’s second largest city. It was founded by Alexander the Great. There are no pyramids here. Hence the trip name.
Take a three-hour (private) drive to Alexandria. Meet your local site guide in the afternoon and visit the new Alexandria Museum, which is possibly far more interesting than any other museum you've been to. At least in the past month or so.
You're picked up from your downtown hotel at about 8am in a private car for the three hour journey to Alexandria
You generally arrive around midday and in the afternoon your local site guide takes you to the new Alexandria Museum (included in the price), containing a fine collection of artefacts discovered in and around the city
The remainder of the day is free, but some worthwhile highlights include the Amphitheatre (entry 30EGP) and the Roman Catacombs (entry 40EGP), built in the 2nd century AD and one of the best examples of private tomb construction from this period
Your guide can help arrange visits to these sites.
Meals included: 1 breakfast
Free day. Walk along the seafront and to check out the famous coffee shops near the Eastern Harbour. Alternatively, there is an optional day tour to El Alamein. Which is a good investment of time. Pretty much anything here is a good investment of time, aside from sleeping.
Other options include Qaitbey Fortress, now a naval museum, where you can see what remains of the famous Pharos (lighthouse) once considered one of the seven wonders of the world
Have a drink in the classic Cecil Hotel, built in 1930 and now one of the city’s great institutions.
Explore the bazaar on Nokrashi Street
Visit one of Alexandria’s famous cafes, including ‘Pastroudi’s’ or ‘Trianon’
Whynot splash out on a seafood dinner at a fancy restaurant
El Alamein - From Alexandria you drive west along the coastal road before turning south towards El Alamein. It takes around 2-3 hours and on arrival you visit the small military museum housing a variety of tanks, armoured vehicles and other wartime memorabilia. You also visit the nearby Allied Cemetery before returning to Alexandria. A picnic lunch is included.
Meals included: 1 breakfast
After breakfast you head back to Cairo, arriving around midday. Then the trip ends and its really sad. Unless you decide to extend for a few days and get to know Cairo a bit better. You know you want to.
Return to Cairo by private car, arriving around midday
