Bigger Than Ben Hur
Start the fun times with sheesha and falafel in Amman, cross the border into Israel and head for Jerusalem - see Masada, Jericho and Bethlehem. From here, it’s on on to Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee (it rhymes!) then back to Jerusalem.
There’s an old book called The Bible which is kind of a big deal. A lot of it was based in Jerusalem, so seeing some of this stuff in real life (the Mount of Olives, Bethlehem etc) could be dubbed a “religious experience”. If you were so inclined.
TRIP CHANGES IN 2015
In 2015 this trip will no longer cross into Israel via the Allenby Bridge, it will instead cross via Sheikh Hussein Brigde in the North of Jordan. This border crossing is located approximately 2.5-3hr drive north of Jordan
The itinerary will also increase from 6 days to 7 days with the additional night spent in Tiberias where we will visit Tabgha and Capernaum. These changes have been made based on past passenger feedback
Day 1 - Amman
Arrive in Amman and check in to your hotel. Rainbow Street is just around the corner; it's where local hipsters go for sheesha and falafel.
No activities planned today, so entertain yourself until the group meeting tonight. A note in the hotel lobby will let you know when and where to meet.
Day 2 - Amman - Jerusalem
Whoever said, "Patience is a virtue," must have had their virtue sorely tested if they'd ever done the border crossing from Jordan into Israel. But at least you end up in Jerusalem. Silver linings. All the Bible stuff is here: Mount of Olives, Gethsemane, the Wailing Wall and Dome of the Rock. If there's time, Yad Vashem also. After meeting your Israeli tour leader on the Israel side, they'll take you on the road to Jerusalem. On Day 5 you have the whole day free to catch up on everything else you've ever wanted to see here.Breakfast
Day 3 - Jerusalem
Head to Masada, then Qumran, which is where the Dead Sea Scrolls come from. If you haven't heard of them, they're just like coffee scrolls, only a bit older and drier. No doubt you're familiar with Bethlehem - alas, the manger is long gone but you can see where it was. Bummer - no trace of gold, frankincense or myrrh (hmmmm, myrrrrrrrh....).
Masada is a clifftop fortress where a Jewish sect called the zealots held out against the Roman army in AD66. Rather than surrended, they either fought to the death or committed suicide, every last man, woman and child. It's kind of like Gallipoli for the state of Israel. You'll also see Jericho en route to Bethlehem. Jericho is one of the longest continually inhabited cities, being some 7,000 years old. Imagine if you'd got in on a sweet real estate deal in year dot, you'd be living life rather large by now.Breakfast
Day 4 - Galilee
Head north to Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee. Which rhymes. Earlier this year researchers found a cone-shaped monument under the water, measuring about 230-feet wide and weighing 60,000 tonnes. It was estimated to have been built around 6000 years ago. Surprised it took them this long to find it.
Visit the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth. By the Sea of Galilee, visit Capernaum, and check out the baptismal site on the Jordan River on the way back to Jerusalem.Breakfast
Day 5 - Jerusalem
Jerusalem has 60 museums, which is more than any other place in Israel. Go and get yourself educated; it's a free day to walk the ramparts of the old city walls, get pious at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, take a trip down to Tel Aviv or simply hang out in the cafes of the Old City.Breakfast
Day 6 - Jerusalem
Your trip ends in Jerusalem today. Say goodbye.Breakfast
