Bigger Than Ben Hur

Bethlehem's Manger Square and the Church of the Nativity
UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jerusalem
Jordan's capital Amman
The Sea of Galilee
  • Start the fun times with sheesha and falafel in Amman, cross the border into Israel and head for Jerusalem - see Masada, Jericho and Bethlehem. From here, it’s on on to Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee (it rhymes!) then back to Jerusalem.

There’s an old book called The Bible which is kind of a big deal. A lot of it was based in Jerusalem, so seeing some of this stuff in real life (the Mount of Olives, Bethlehem etc) could be dubbed a “religious experience”. If you were so inclined.

    Itinerary

    Day 1 - Amman

Arrive in Amman and check in to your hotel. No activities except for welcome meeting.

    Day 2 - Amman - Tiberias

Make our way from Amman to Israel via Sheikh Hussein border in the north. Arrive in the afternoon and meet your new leader on the other side.  After pick up, drive to Tiberias for dinner and overnight stay.

    Day 3 - Tiberias - Nazareth - Jerusalem

This morning tour Tiberias visiting Tabgha, where Jesus performed the Miracle of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes.  Visit Capernaum.  On to Nazareth to visit the Church of the Annunciation and Mary’s Well.  Continue to Jerusalem either through Highway 6 or through the Coastal Highway.

    Breakfast

    Day 4 - Jerusalem - Masada - Jericho - Jerusalem

Head to Masada, then on to Jericho.  From there drive to Bethlehem to visit the Church of the Nativity and the Shepherds’ Fields before coming back to Jerusalem for overnight. No doubt you're familiar with Bethlehem - alas, the manger is long gone but you can see where it was. Bummer - no trace of gold, frankincense or myrrh (hmmmm, myrrrrrrrh....).

Masada is a clifftop fortress where a Jewish sect called the zealots held out against the Roman army in AD66. Rather than surrended, they either fought to the death or committed suicide, every last man, woman and child. It's kind of like Gallipoli for the state of Israel. You'll also see Jericho en route to Bethlehem. Jericho is one of the longest continually inhabited cities, being some 7,000 years old. Imagine if you'd got in on a sweet real estate deal in year dot, you'd be living life rather large by now.

    Breakfast

    Day 5 - Jerusalem - Yad Vashem - Jerusalem

Begin your tour of Jerusalem with a panoramic view of the city. You then drive via Gethsemane to a gate through which you enter the Old City. You walk to the 'Cardo' in the recently restored Jewish Quarter, which was the old north-south axis in Roman times. You visit the Western Wall, Via Dolorosa (Stations of the Cross) and the Church of the Holy Sepulchure.  After lunch (not included) the tour continues with a visit to Yad Vashem (Israel's memorial to the Holocaust) before returning to the point of departure.

    Breakfast

    Day 6 - Jerusalem - Nablus - Sabastya - Jerusalem

Does your bucket list include: ‘visit olive oil soap factory’? Phew! Today we’ll head out to Nablus and tick that one off. We’ll also visit the Turkish Hammam (Bath) and eat our collective weight in knafeh (mouth-watering, cheesy pastry deliciousness drenched in sweet, sweet syrup). Afterwards, visit Mount Gerizim, walk through ancient Roman ruins in Sabastya and see where John the Baptist was allegedly beheaded. Bunk down in J-town again tonight.
    Breakfast
