10,000 Minutes of Morocco

UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jamaâ El Fna
Fes - the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco
Meknes' UNESCO World Heritage-listed old medina
  • Morocco in 8 days? Oh yes you Moroc-can. Do your best Bogart impression in Casablanca, then train it to Meknes and do your best Roman soldier impression in Volubilis. The medinas of Fes and Marrakech could well be the world’s funnest place in which to get hopelessly and utterly lost.

No amount of giggling or wriggling will deter the women of a Moroccan hammam. Like a cross between your grandma and a WWF wrestler, they’ll clamp you down and scrub til your skin is smoother than George Clooney drinking a single malt scotch.

    Day 1-2 - Casablanca-Moulay Idriss

Arrive in Casablanca and check out the Hassan II mosque. Get acquainted with Casablanca. Welcome meeting at 6:00pm on Day 1.

    • Train to Meknes, drive to the whitewashed village of Moulay Idriss to stay at a family-run guesthousewhich always means some delicious home-cooking.

    Day 3-4 - Fes

Fun Fes fact: University of Al-Karaouine is the world’s first uni. It was founded in 859 by a woman. Way to go Fatima al-Fihri! Head to the main square for a mint tea so sweet it'll knock your socks off (if it wasn't too hot to wear them).

    • Explore the Roman ruins at Volubilis, wander around old medina of Meknes with a guide before heading to Fes
    • Guided tour of the old city
    • Explore the Funduk Nejjarine lodging house
    • Optional trip to nearby Medersa el Attarine, built in 1323
    • Free time, why not check out the nearby spa town of Moulay Yacoub?

    Day 5 - Fes-Marrakech

Back on the train, this time to mind-boggling Marrakech. Hit the souks, which start at the Djemaa el Fna and spread outwards in spokes. The front bit is for tourist knick-knacks and the back section is where you’ll find metalworkers, wood carvers, tanneries and cobblers.

    • Full day train ride, bound for Marrakech
    • Once in Marrakech, you'll want to head straight to Djemaa el Fna, the great square

    Day 6-8 - Marrakech

Nighttime in the Djemaa el Fna means fire eaters, snake charmers and storytellers galore. Scrub your sins away in a hammam, shop for tagines, get a Berber coffee and order a plate of piping hot snails.

    Day 6

    Walk around Marrakech's old medina

    • Free time to explore the souks and alleyways of the city, maybe check out the El Badi Palace, the Majorelle Garden or the Museum of Islamic Art
    • Head down to Djemaa el Fna, a hub of exciting local entertainment and cuisine

    Day 7

    • Spend free time at the shops or exploring the many maze like laneways and streets of the old medina
    • Perhaps head back to the Djemma el Fna for a final night out

Being two girls in Morocco, we thought it would be a better idea to do a tour. So I think the tour was a great way to meet other people and we did not have to worry about organising transport or accommodation as this was all done for us. We wanted to make a few changes to our itinerary and out tour leaders were very helpful in making that happen and explaining to us all the options we had! IT was great and everything worked out very well. Thank you Gecko.
