Leave Marrakeah for the coast and Essaouira, ie beach, cafes, history and markets. Eat some seafood before heading back to Marrakech for one last feast and some market play.

Essaouira has been described as a “crossroad of cultures”. That’s not very accurate, because with its African, Islamic, Arab, Berber, Jewish and European influences, it’s more like a really busy six-lane highway with lots of slip roads.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech - Essaouira

It's a three-hour bus ride from Marrakech to the coast, which is a trip you'll make today. Pee before you get on. When you get to Essaouira you'll be taken to your hotel and then taken around the town. Which will be great.

Day 2: Essaouira

Meals included: 1 breakfast

Free time in Essaouira means one of three things: markets, cafes or beach. You can do all three, but probably not at the one time. The locals swear that Jimi Hendrix was inspired to write Castles Made of Sand by the ruins of the Borj El-Berod watchtower, a crumbling fortress on the water's edge. The fact the song was recorded two years before he came here is just a minor detail.

Day 3: Essaouira - Marrakech

Meals included: 1 breakfast

Before you go, head down to the fish stalls and watch the catch of the day get grilled before your very eyes. Sardines, lobster, shrimp, scallops, octopus and sea urchin are all on the menu. Then it's back on the bus to Marrakech for one last night. Why not head for Djemaa el Fna for one last tajine overlooking the square?

Day 4: Marrakech

Meals included: 1 breakfast

The trip ends today after breakfast. Don't be sad because you're leaving, be glad because you came. Remember: it's better to have Morocco'd and lost than to have never Morocco'd at all. Stick around for a hammam, you'll be left feeling so relaxed you'll practically float home.
