The Halfway-To-Hell Club is about as scary as it sounds. While they were building the Golden Gate Bridge in the 1930s, a safety net hung from end to end. 19 guys fell over the edge and were saved by the net, becoming part of this exclusive little club.

    Itinerary

Day 1-2 - Los Angeles - San Diego

Stuff you might feel under your feet in San Diego: grass at Balboa Park, sand at Mission Beach, rollerblades, a boogie board, bike pedals, a dance floor and maybe some animal poo at San Diego Zoo or Sea World Adventure Park.

    • Morning group meeting
    • With the sun on your face, say goodbye to LA and hello to the Southern California city of San Diego
    • Laze in grassy Balboa Park or feel sand between your toes at Mission Beach and top up your tan
    • San Diego has the perfect environment for so many beachfront activities; rollerblading, beach volleyball, boogie boarding and bicycling
    • Later, cruise the Gaslamp Quarter and the heart of San Diego's nightlife
    • Perhaps spend time at the world-famous San Diego Zoo or Sea World Adventure Park

    Day 3 - Colorado River

London Bridge is in London, right? Wrong. Sort of. The original London Bridge was built in 1831 over the River Thames, but by 1962 it couldn't support all that modern-day traffic so the city sold it to... Arizona. See it and confuse your friends back home with photos.

    • Visit Salvation Mountain and stop for a photo at the sand dunes
    • Feel the heat beneath the blue skies of the Mojave Desert, cool off in the Colorado River and check out the original London Bridge

    Day 4-5 - Grand Canyon

There's no such thing as a free lunch. But watching sunset over the Grand Canyon won't cost you a cent and we promise it will sustain you longer than a burrito. If you drop your sunnies over the edge, take the optional helicopter flight and see if you can spot them.

    • Hike from the forest above to the desert below, red rock to white powder
    • Take an optional helicopter flight for a birds-eye view and marvel at the brilliant colours

    Day 6-7 - Las Vegas

Driving down The Strip in a limo is optional, but we honestly can't think of a reason why you wouldn't do this, unless you hate fun. Say hello to the best five words in the English language: All-you-can-eat-buffet. Try not to lose all your pocket money in the casinos, we don't want to have to explain it to your mum.

    • Drive via Seligman - a classic Route 66 town
    • As the desert city comes into view, luminous Vegas ups the ante
    • Catch some rays by the hotel pool then dive into "The Strip" in style on an optional limousine tour
    • Indulge in an all-you-can eat buffet, take in a show or just watch the amazing crowds, neon and attractions that many hotel casinos have to offer
    • Take an optional helicopter flight down The Strip then gamble in one of the world class casinos before hitting the world famous clubs

Day 8-10 - Sierra Nevada - Yosemite National Park

Contrary to popular belief, Kanye's ego is not the largest living thing on earth. Giant sequoias are (well, almost). See them in Yosemite National Park then work off that Las Vegas buffet with a hike to waterfalls or a bike ride.

    • Wind through high-up peaks with far-out views across the Sierra Nevadas that will have you itching to get your trekking boots on, and there is no better place than one of nature's greatest back yards, Yosemite National Park
    • Stretch your legs and walk amongst the Giant Sequoias
    • Hike to one of the magnificent waterfalls, or hire a bicycle to pedal along the park roads

    Day 11-12 - San Francisco

Mrs Doutbfire, The Social Network, The Rock and Dr Dolittle were all set in San Francisco. You might need a drink after this mind-blowing fact. Our pick? Toronado and Monk's Mission for beers, Trick Dog for cocktails and Jamber Wine Pub for, um, wine.

    • Fall for Frisco's charm while touring Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf and the hillside heights
    • Enjoy a full day to explore the city, with plenty of time for shopping, sightseeing and a stroll over the Golden Gate Bridge
    • Perhaps take a cruise on the bay for an unforgettable sunset, then go bar hopping 'til the tiny hours
    • Mission and Marina Districts usually check the right boxes

    Day 13 - Pacific Coast

You might spot whales and sea lions along the coast. We're not promising anything, but we'll see what we can do. Drive to Big Sur then head across to your campsite near San Luis Obispo. Sunset over the Pacific Ocean could bring a tear to your eye. Once again, not promising anything.

    • Depart San Francisco and arrive into Monterey
    • Take a walk along the coast with possible whale and sea lion sightings, or use the free time to shop
    • Drive to Big Sur and the viewpoint of McWay Falls
    • Stop to see sea lions and elephant seals
    • Continue to campsite somewhere near San Luis Obispo
    • Settle in to your camp and watch the sunset over the sparkling Pacific Ocean

    Day 14 - Los Angeles

Stop at Santa Barbara for a swim, then head back to LA and people-watch down at Venice Beach. Now is the time to get your obligatory photo under the Hollywood sign. Trip ends about 5pm today. Sadly.

    • Drive via Santa Barbara where there is free time to explore or go for a swim
    • Time to head back to 'La La Land' where we'll take a short tour of Hollywood and Venice Beach
    • This tour ends at our gateway hotel at approximately 5pm, if you are planning to fly tonight, please do not book a flight that departs before 9pm
  • What's Included

    • Tour leader, transport and sightseeing.

    Not Included

    • International flights, airport transfers, departure taxes, visas, insurance (compulsory on all trips), meals not listed (lunches and dinners), any optional tours or activities during free time, camera fees, excess baggage charges, tips and items of a personal nature.

    Safety Information

    UNFENCED CAMP SITES:
On some trips you will at times stay in unfenced camp sites within national parks. While this is a fantastic experience, there are a few safety rules to follow. While staying in national parks it's important that you listen to any advice given by your tour leader and the park rangers regarding responsible and safe behaviour.
    BEARS:
Whilst travelling throughout North America it's not uncommon to encounter bears within campsites and national parks. Your group leader has been specifically trained for these situations and, if camping, will inform the group on how to 'bear proof' the camp in the evenings or when the site is unattended. There's absolutely no reason to be alarmed by this possibility as it is extremely rare for bears to attack humans.
