Viva Cuba
-
Overview
Hemingway always laid an extra spot at his table for unexpected guests. He entertained movie stars and politicans but never other writers - it was considered bad luck. He owned more than 50 cats. And he only ever write standing up. You could say Hemingway was a bit of an eccentric.
Itinerary
Day 1-3 - Havana
Forget about food and shopping, Havana's not that kind of city. Here it's all about music, dancing, drinking, Che, cars, cigars and a guy called Hemingway.
Day 1
- Get acquainted with Havana
- Pre-departure meeting in the evening
Day 2
- Spend the day exploring (La Habana Vieja) Old Havana
- Perhaps visit a local historic bar and grab a mojito in the evening
Day 3
- Enjoy free time strolling around Havana and taking in the architecture, culture, museums, restaurants and bars
BreakfastDay 4-6 - Santiago de Cuba
It's home to three of Cuba's greatest icons - Afro-Cuban music, Bacardi and the Cuban revolution. Feel like a big kid whilst running around the 16th century Castillo del Morro, where nobody tells you off for mucking around on turrets, drawbridges, dungeons, cannons and tunnels.
- Leave Havana and fly to Santiago de Cuba
- Take a walking tour of this musical, revolutionary city
- Set off to explore the city on your own during free time
BreakfastDay 7 - Camaguey
Your legs must be tired from all the salsa dancing, so rest up on the long drive to Camaguey. Don't stress if you get lost here - the streets were purposely designed as a maze in order to confuse pirates and looters.
- Drive past cattle farms, citrus orchards and sugar plantations before arriving in Camaguey
- Get to know this surprising town, riddled with twisting streets and alleyways
BreakfastDay 8-10 - Trinidad
Cobblestone streets, pastel houses, old Chevroletes, ice cream shops, churches and locals who like nothing better than puffing away on cigars and gossiping. This is Cuba.
- Take a morning tour of the old town centre of Camaguey
- Drive across the interior to historic Trinidad - quintessential Cuba
- Set off on your own exploration of the town
- Perhaps climb the bell tower of the central Museo Nacional de la Lucha Contra Bandidos (a former convent) for great views over the old rooftops and surrounding hills
- Why not visit some of the great local markets
- Get your beach beach fix - it's a short ride in a 'coco taxi'
BreakfastDay 11 - Santa Clara
This is where Che Guevara and 17 of his men put a bulldozer on the tracks to stop 300 soldiers and train full of ammunition on its way to Havana. They say he's buried inside the walls of the Che Guevara Monument.
- Head inland to the historic city of Santa Clara
- Visit the Revolutionary Plaza and the Che Guevara Monument
BreakfastDay 12 - Havana
You can't leave without taking a trip in a coco cab. It's got a big round shell and looks somewhat like a motorised coconut. It's even more amusing after a few mojitos.
- The trip comes to an end on arrival back in Havana
