It's time to live out your Mexican food fantasies. Tequila, burritos, nachos, tacos... is your mouth watering yet?
(Was Mexico City to Cancun)
Itinerary
Day 1-3 - Mexico City - Teotihuacan
Spend our first few days in Mexico City with a trip out to the 1800-year-old ruins at Teotihuacan.
Day 1
- Pre-departure meeting in the evening
Day 2
- Visit the Teotihuacan ruins - the site of the massive ‘Piramides del Sol y de la Luna’(Pyramids of the Sun and Moon)
- Discover the site's remaining buildings with the help of a local guide
Day 3
- Take a morning walking tour through Mexico City's historic heart
- Spend free time to discovering the city's museums, galleries, plazas and public buildings
Day 4 - Puebla
Puebla is packed with churches (70 in the city centre alone), so the best thing to do is check out a few, then head to the market for local hand-painted ceramics and street food.
- Catch a morning bus bound for Puebla
- Enjoy a day at your leisure to explore the charming city
- Perhaps visit to explore some of Puebla's 70 churches or thousand or so colonial buildings
Day 5-6 - Oaxaca - Monte Alban - San Cristobal
Next up is Oaxaca. This is the place to shop for colourful textiles and lots of different margarita flavours. Stop by the Zapotec ruins at Monte Alban on our way to San Cristobal.
Day 5
- Get lost among Oaxaca's renowned handicraft markets
Perhaps relax in a local cafe after a haggling frenzy
Day 6
- Drive from Oaxaca to the ancient Zapotec ruins at Monte Alban
- Trawl over the remains of plazas, tombs, palaces and temples with help from a local site guide
- Board an overnight bus to San Cristobal de Las Casas
Day 7-8 - San Cristobal
Ever wondered how to suture a wound using human hair? The Mayans knew all about it, so pick up a few tips.
- Visit San Cristobal's beautiful churches, grab some bargains at the weekly market and continue the search for the best taco in Mexico
Day 9-10 - Palenque
See the impressive 1300-year-old Mayan palace at Palenque with screeching parrots and monkeys as your soundtrack.
- Stop by the blue waterfalls of Agua Azul and Misol Ha en route to Palenque
- Learn the history of the Palenque ruins and Mayan people while exploring with a local guide
Day 11-12 - Merida
Nearly every Mexican dish is made using corn tortillas (like tacos, tostadas, flautas, chilaquiles and enchiladas), and there's a bicycle cart on almost every corner in Merida selling elotes (corn on the cob) doused in salt, chilli, cheese, lemon juice or mayonaise. So yeah, they like corn.
- Travel by bus to Merida
- Utilise your tour guide to make the most of free time exploring this 'White City'
Day 13-14 - Chichen Itza - Cancun
Cancun. People either hate it or love it. We're guessing after two days of snorkelling, diving, swimming, tanning, seafood, cocktails and freshly squeezed juices you'll be leaning towards the latter.
Day 13
- Set off for the Caribbean Coast
- Swing by one of Mexico's most famous Mayan sites, Chichen Itza
- Spend plenty of time learning about and exploring the temples, pyramids and ruins
Day 14
- The trip ends today after breakfast
