  • This is the bout you’ve been waiting for: You vs. the Inca Trail. Limber up in Lima, then fly to Cusco for acclimatization. Spend four days hard slogging it up South America’s most celebrated trek and be rewarded with a Machu Picchu sunrise

Three traits you don’t want to be remembered for on a trek: whinging, laziness and being a sulky-pants. But don’t stress, your support crew will feed you up with lollies, fruit and sugary drinks to help keep the demons at bay.

    Itinerary

    Day 1 - Lima

Bienvenido al Peru. Meet your group and local tour guide, then get to know each other over a few pisco sours and a plate of Lima's famous ceviche (raw fish marinated in lime juice, chilli, onions and tomato).

    • Orientation walk with tour leader.
    • Pre-departure meeting is at 2pm.

    Day 2-3 - Cusco

Fly to Cusco. Spend the next two days trying to acclimatise (ie. no strenuous activity). Visit the alpaca farms in the sacred valley for knitted things and the market town of Pisac for leather goods.

    • Spend time acclimatising in Cusco
    • Take a walking tour around the central part of town
    • Perhaps explore the great Inca sites of Sacsayhuaman, Quenca and Tambo Machay
    • Enough free time to take in all of the local sights
    Breakfast

    Day 4-7 - Inca Trek

Break out the walking shoes, sunscreen and mozzie repellent because it's time to meet Machu Picchu.

    Day 4

    • Gaze upon massive Inca fortifications in Ollantaytambo
    • Begin the Inca trek
    • Hike past the ancient hilltop fort of Huillca Raccay and the archaeological site of Llactapata
    • Stunning views of snow-capped Veronica Peak
    • Camp near the village of Wayllabamba

    Day 5

    • The most difficult part of the trek - Dead Woman’s Pass
    • Panoramas of the Vilcanota and Vilcabama mountain ranges, and ruins in the valley below
    • Camp with a view over the cloud forest

    Day 6

    • Climb up to the ruins of Runkuracay
    • Continue up the Inca staircase
    • Spectacular views of Pumasillo and the entire Vilcabamba range
    • Enter the beautiful cloud forest

    Day 7

    • The final, and most spectacular, leg of the trek to Machu Picchu
    • Arrive at Inti Punku, the Gateway of the Sun
    • Experience a panoramic view of Machu Picchu at sunrise
    • Explore Machu Picchu on a guided tour
    • Return to Cusco by train
    Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

    Day 8 - Cusco

The trip ends in Cusco today, so make the most of your final hours. After all, it's not every day you find yourself in the ancient capital of the Inca Empire.

    • Perhaps spend free time shopping for handicrafts, visiting museums, seeing the sights, sampling local cuisine or relaxing
    • Trip ends in Cusco after breakfast, no activities planned so departure flights can be out at any time

We really enjoyed our trip and the experiences offered. We especially liked being able to do our own thing for much of the time and the quality of the dining experiences offered. We would love to see changes to the tipping system that makes sure they are paid by everyone before they arrive as there is a cultural difficulty for Australians to accept the tipping system and we felt that as a group this was a difficult thing to negotiate. We would rather see everyone pay the same amount prior to leaving and then have the tour leader divide the tipping appropriately.
