Your first priority should be ordering a plate of fried cuy (guinea pig). Peruvians eat around 65 million of the critters each year. Cusco’s main cathedral even has a version of the Last Supper showing Christ and his disciples dining on one.

Itinerary
Day 1-2 - Lima
Once you've seen enough of the sights, stop by one of the bars in the Barranco Quarter and bust a traditional Afro-Peruvian move or two.

- Spend free time exploring Peru's capital
BreakfastDay 3-4 - Cusco
Fun Cusco fact #487: the last surviving Inca was called Tupac. Depending on your Google skills he was either beheaded by Spanish conquistadors or went on to become one of the highest-selling rappers of all time.
Day 3
- Acclimatise in Cusco in preparation for the Inca trek
Day 4
- Take a walking tour of central Cusco
- Explore Cusco and see the local sights during free time
BreakfastDay 5-8 - Inca Trek
It's cliched but oh so true - trekking Machu Picchu will be a once in a lifetime experience - unless you're the sort of sick masochist who needs to do it again.
Day 5
- Gaze upon massive Inca fortifications in Ollantaytambo
- Begin the Inca trek
- Hike past the ancient hilltop fort of Huillca Raccay and the archaeological site of Llactapata
- Stunning views of snow-capped Veronica Peak
- Camp near the village of Wayllabamba
Day 6
- The most difficult part of the trek - Dead Woman’s Pass
- Panoramas of the Vilcanota and Vilcabama mountain ranges, and ruins in the valley below
- Camp with a view over the cloud forest
Day 7
- Climb up to the ruins of Runkuracay
- Continue up the Inca staircase
- Spectacular views of Pumasillo and the entire Vilcabamba range
- Enter the beautiful cloud forest
Day 8
- The final, and most spectacular, leg of the trek to Machu Picchu
- Arrive at Inti Punku, the Gateway of the Sun
- Experience a panoramic view of Machu Picchu at sunrise
- Explore Machu Picchu on a guided tour
- Return to Cusco by train
Breakfast | Lunch | DinnerDay 9 - Cusco
Shop, recover, sprawl dramatically on the footpath groaning in pain - do whatever you want because the day is yours.
- Relax and unwind or spend free time exploring Cusco's many markets, museums, eateries and local sights
BreakfastDay 10-11 - Amazon Jungle
See toucans, otters, spider monkeys and hopefully avoid anacondas. Oh, and don't pat the poison dart frogs. Got it?
Day 10
- Fly to Puerto Maldonado, deep in the Peruvian Amazon
- Take a two-hour boat trip to the jungle lodge
- Head into the jungle with a guide and learn about the Amazon's wildlife, jungle food and flora and fauna
- Take in the views from a 30m high canopy tower
Day 11
- Wake early and take a boat ride in search of giant river otters, caimen, hoatzin and wading birds
- Journey to indigenous Indian farmlands
- Optional evening presentation on the Infierno Ecotourism project
Breakfast | Lunch | DinnerDay 12 - Lima
If you don't board the plane in Lima wearing a colourful woolen poncho and a beanie then you're probably naked.
- Transfer by boat back to Puerto Maldonado
- Fly over the Andes back to Lima
- The trip ends once you arrive in the Peruvian capital
- Tour ends on arrival at Lima Airport – please ensure departure flights are not booked out of Lima prior to 1700hrs.

What to know
A good level of fitness and pre-trip training is essential for the Inca Trek. You will trek on hilly terrain or mountainous terrain at altitudes of up to 4200 metres, for up to 7 hours per day.
