10 FACTY THINGS ABOUT THAILAND

Dreaming of escaping to Thailand? Us too. Like right now. Here’s some stuff we bet you didn’t know about the land of Pad Thai.

1. MOUTHFUL

Bangkok’s full name is Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit. This translate literally to: ‘The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city (unlike Ayutthaya) of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn’.

“The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city (unlike Ayutthaya) of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn.”

2. UNOPENED GIFTS

If you give a gift when visiting a Thai home, don’t be offended if they don’t open it until you leave. It’s called manners.

3. IT’S ALL SO QUIET

Raising your voice in Thailand is an embarrassing loss of face. Keep your cool even if you’re losing your cool.

4. THERE’S NO POINT

Pointing in Thailand is rude, so try not to do it.

5. HOLY HEAD

The head is considered a sacred part of the body, so don’t touch a Thai’s head.

6. KEEPING IT CLEAN

It’s considered bad luck to sweep the house after dark. Best excuse ever for not cleaning.

7. SIAMESE TWINS

The first internationally-known Siamese twins came from the Kingdom of Siam, known to us as Thailand.

8. KEEP YOUR SHIRT ON

While Thailand might be known for it’s relaxed beach vibe, going shirtless is actually an offense.

9. MONKEY MADNESS

There’s an annual festival called the Monkey Feast. More than 600 monkeys feast on huge helpings of fruit and meat at a remote temple.

10. SAY WHAT?

The Thai alphabet has 44 consonants and 32 vowels. That’s a mouthful.
