No trip to South East Asia is complete without visiting Vietnam. Here are 10 reasons why it will blow your mind.
1. BIKER’S PLAYGROUND
There are around 10 million motorbikes on Vietnam’s roads each day and sometimes it feels like that many bicycles as well.
2. DOING WELL
Although Vietnam is a developing country it has a literacy rate of around 94% and very low unemployment.
Vietnam is the world’s largest exporter of cashews. That’s nuts!
There are six different tones used in Vietnamese. So basically, if you’re tone deaf you’ll be asking for a set of books instead of a bowl of soup.
5. GOOD COMPANY
Hanoi shares the same latitude as Honolulu and Cancun.
6. NAME THAT BUILDING
A pagoda is a place of worship; a temple is built in honour of a national hero. Mix it up at your own peril.
7. BIG BIRTHDAY BASH
All Vietnamese celebrate their birthday on the same day, which just happens to be Tet, the New Year festival. That’s gotta be a big cake.
8. AMERICAN WAR
The Vietnam War is called the American War in Vietnam.
9. COLOUR CODED
The beautiful Ao Dai dress is still worn by many Vietnamese women. School girls wear white, young unmarried women wear light pastels and older married women wear big bold colours
10. CU CHI TUNNELS
The Cu Chi Tunnels, used during the American War, stretch about 121km. That’s 20 times the length of the Vegas Strip. But without the neon.
