THE 22 BEST TRAVEL QUOTES YOU’VE (PROBABLY) NEVER HEARD

Travellers are mad for travel quotes. If you’re a serious traveller, and your friends are serious travellers, we reckon your Facebook and Twitter feeds are completely littered with quotes. Some might be old as time itself (and pretty cliched by now) and some might be a bit fresher, part of the ‘new wave’ of travel quotes.

Some of these aren’t really travel quotes, but they go some way to describe our philosophy of travel. It’s all about freedom, you see. And making the most of every moment:

“I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read on the train.” – Oscar Wilde

“People say there are delays on flights. Delays, really? New York to California in five hours, that used to take 30 years, a bunch of people used to die on the way there, have a baby, you would end up with a whole different group of people by the time you got there. Now you watch a movie and [go to the toilet] and you’re home.” - Louis C.K.

“The more you look, the more you see.” ― Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

“Tourists don’t know where they’ve been, travellers don’t know where they’re going.” – Paul Theroux

“Half the fun of travel is the aesthetic of lostness.” – Ray Bradbury

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow! What a Ride!’” ― Hunter S. Thompson

“I think it’s clever how Rome have kept a load of old stuff. There’s no overheads, yet people are going over there to see it.” – Karl Pilkington

“Mountains should be climbed with as little effort as possible and without desire. The reality of your own nature should determine the speed. If you become restless, speed up. If you become winded, slow down. You climb the mountain in an equilibrium between restlessness and exhaustion. Then, when you’re no longer thinking ahead, each footstep isn’t just a means to an end but a unique event in itself….To live only for some future goal is shallow. It’s the sides of the mountains which sustain life, not the top.” ― Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

“A good traveller has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.” – Lao Tzu

“What does it mean to pre-board? Do you get on before you get on?” – George Carlin

“I want to hang a map of the world in my house, and then I’m gonna put pins into all the locations that I’ve traveled to. But first I’m gonna have to travel to the top two corners of the map, so it won’t fall down.” – Mitch Hedberg

“The free soul is rare, but you know it when you see it – basically because you feel good, very good, when you are near or with them.” ― Charles Bukowski, Tales of Ordinary Madness

“If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness and fears.” – Cesare Pavese

“I travel a lot; I hate having my life disrupted by routine.” – Caskie Stinnett

“A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it.” – John Steinbeck

“Freedom is something that dies unless it’s used.” ― Hunter S. Thompson

“You can’t walk down here at all. It can’t be a shortcut because you get stopped every few seconds.” [moves aside to let an elderly woman pass] “See? I bet she left the house when she was 10!” – Karl Pilkington

“Not all those who wander are lost,” – J.R.R Tolkien

“One doesn’t discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time.” – André Gide

“Wandering re-establishes the original harmony which once existed between man and the universe.” – Anatole France

“There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep on rolling under the stars.” – Jack Kerouac

“Buy the ticket, take the ride.” – Hunter S. Thompson
