Facty things: 10 facts about Borneo
Read time: a bit over 1 minute
Borneo’s a good one. It’s one of those destinations that’s shrouded in a kind of wild romance. It’s the kind of place you’ve read a lot about, but probably haven’t met all that many people who’ve actually been. It’s got orangutans, Mt. Kinabalu, some of the world’s finest jungles – it’s a real explorers dream. We strongly urge you take a trip there and find out for yourself, but in the meantime, have some facts.
1. KINABALU CALLING
Borneo’s home to Mount Kinabalu – the highest peak in South East Asia. Impressed? You should be.
2. OLD HABITATS DIE HARD
The Borneo rainforest has an estimated age of 130 million years, making in the oldest rainforest in the world.
3. BUT OLD HABITATS STILL DIE
Half of the world’s global timber acquisition comes from Borneo. In 1975, 73.7% of the country was covered in rainforest. Now, only 50.5% is covered. Not cool. Not cool for a minute.
4. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE CORPSES
The Rafflesia Arnoldii flower, that grows on Mount Kinabalu, smells like a rotten corpse. It’s even been nicknamed the “corpse flower”. Pretty gross.
5. RAFFLESIA ARNOLDII SCHWARZNEGGER
On a related note, the Rafflesia Arnoldii produces the largest individual flower in the world.
6. THIRD LARGEST
Borneo is the third largest island in the world, right behind Greenland and New Guinea. If you know how big Germany is, Borneo is twice the size.
7. PLANTS FOR DAYS
Borneo probably has the highest diversity of flora in the world, boasting around 15,000 different species. Mental.
8. LOCALS ONLY
Borneo has a population of 16 million and is home to roughly 200 ethnicities. The natives – a term that covers all ethnicities – are known as Dayaks.
9 ORANGUTAN LAND
Orangutans are the only apes in the whole entire world that are from Asia. The word ‘orangutan’ translates to ‘man of the forest’ and they can only be found in the jungles of Borneo and Sumatra.
10. THE ARMS RACE
An orangutan’s arms can span over eight feet. Eight. Freakin’. Feet. This makes it very hard to steal from an orangutan.
11. LEGEND OF THE BORNEAN HORNED FROG
Horned frogs are native to Borneo. They have awesome horn-type things sticking out over their years. End of fact.
