1. AHEAD OF ITS TIME
Dubrovnik, back when it was an independent state, was the first place to recognize the US’s independence.
2. RETIREMENT HOME
Diocletian’s Palace is probably the fanciest retirement home we’ve ever seen. It was built for Emperor Diocletian’s sunset years in 305 AD.
3. ALSO, COMMUNITY HOME
Still with the Diocletian’s Palace; years after his death the palace became a communal home for locals. Even now it’s filled with restaurants, businesses and homes.
4. GREAT INVENTORS
Croatians invented the first parachute and the first necktie. Just in case you want to jump out of a plane looking snazzy.
Although there are over 1,000 islands and islets in Croatia, only 50 are inhabited.
6. DALMATIAN DOGS
Dalmatian dogs originated in Croatia. The name was a hint.
7. FREE BIRTH
If you give birth on the ferry between Jadrolinija and Hvar your child will get free travel on the ferry for life.
8. OLD EGYPT
The Sphinx in Split was brought over from Egypt for Diocletian and is over 4,000 years old.
9. SUNNY DAYS
Croatia enjoys 2,715 hours of sunshine a year. That’s more than Sydney, Australia.
10. MARCO! POLO!
While there’s always debate about where Marco Polo originated from, the Croatians are adamant it’s their island Korcula. Who are we to argue?
