FACTY THINGS: 10 FACTS ABOUT CROATIA

Travelling through Croatia is similar to travelling through other parts of the world, only distinctly more Croatian. Facts about Croatia, on the other hand, are like nothing else in the world.

1. AHEAD OF ITS TIME

Dubrovnik, back when it was an independent state, was the first place to recognize the US’s independence.

2. RETIREMENT HOME

Diocletian’s Palace is probably the fanciest retirement home we’ve ever seen. It was built for Emperor Diocletian’s sunset years in 305 AD.

3. ALSO, COMMUNITY HOME

Still with the Diocletian’s Palace; years after his death the palace became a communal home for locals. Even now it’s filled with restaurants, businesses and homes.

4. GREAT INVENTORS

Croatians invented the first parachute and the first necktie. Just in case you want to jump out of a plane looking snazzy.

5. SERENITY

Although there are over 1,000 islands and islets in Croatia, only 50 are inhabited.

6. DALMATIAN DOGS

Dalmatian dogs originated in Croatia. The name was a hint.

7. FREE BIRTH

If you give birth on the ferry between Jadrolinija and Hvar your child will get free travel on the ferry for life.

8. OLD EGYPT

The Sphinx in Split was brought over from Egypt for Diocletian and is over 4,000 years old.

9. SUNNY DAYS

Croatia enjoys 2,715 hours of sunshine a year. That’s more than Sydney, Australia.

10. MARCO! POLO!

While there’s always debate about where Marco Polo originated from, the Croatians are adamant it’s their island Korcula. Who are we to argue?
