1. NEW CRATER
Nicaragua’s Cerro Negro is the youngest volcano in Central America.
2. ROOM TO MOVE
Nicaragua is Central America’s least populated country.
3. KILLER VIPER
Nicaragua is home to the ‘ultimate pit viper’ the Barba Amarilla which is considered the most aggressive snake in Central America.
4. STRANGE TIDES
Lake Nicaragua is the only freshwater lake in the world with oceanic animal life, which includes sharks, fish and swordfish.
Nicaragua is home to a species of Tarantula referred to be locals as ‘pica-caballo’ (the horse biter) for its super strong venom, capable of penetrating a horse’s hoof.
6. LARGER THAN LIFE
Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America.
7. AMERICAN HORROR STORY
In the mid 1850’s American soldier William Walker took over Nicaragua, named himself president of the country, and then went onto try and take control of all of Central America (before being executed in Honduras in 1860).
Nicaragua’s main export is coffee.

After an earthquake in 1610, the whole city of Leon was moved due to another location.
10. FRIGHTENING FOLKLORE
In Nicaraguan folklore a shape-shifting, superhuman witch called ‘La Cegua’ lives in the woods and sends her victims insane with terror. Her name is evoked to ensure men return home straight after work..
