If epic ruins, mystical, magical mountains and bucketloads of llamas are your bag, Machu Picchu is your mecca. Set high above the Urubamba River in Peru’s misty mountain ranges, Machu Picchu was abandoned in the 16th century when the Spaniards conquered the Inca Empire (boo, hiss…). Inadvertently rediscovered in the early 20th century by American explorer Hiram Bingham (he was searching for a different Lost City), the site is now Peru’s most popular traveller attraction. Some come for the ancient citadel and cosmic positioning, others for the cute little llamas munching on grass.
Pull on your thickest socks and hardiest of hiking boots for the four-day Machu Picchu trek along the famous Inca Trail. Gobbling jelly snakes and guzzling cordial as you go, huff and puff your way up and over Dead Woman’s Pass before snuggling your weary bones down each night into your comfy tent digs. ‘Gram the most awesome sunrise of your life at the Sun Gate on day four, then spend a morning moseying about the grounds on a guided Machu Picchu tour. Not so big on hiking? There’s also the option of taking the less-challenging (read: train and bus) route up to MP. Much less demanding, but no less spectacular.

Peru Unearthed, September 2017
I have never taken a tour before until I went with geckos and I highly advise that geckos be the first anyone should consider when choosing to take a tour. The activities plan and the hospitality of the group leaders are second to none. I would love to be able to travel with them again but unfortunately I will be to old to attend and will have to fend for myself in this big wide world that geckos made feel so inviting. Don't hesitate and book your holiday with geckos adventures now! You won't regret it!

Peru Highlights, August 2017
Geckos provided a cultural, local experience to South America that showcased the historical and adventurous side of the nations we visited. So easy to make friends and loved having smaller groups.
