Map of Bali & Beyond including Indonesia

From Ubud to traipsing up a volcano in Mt Batur and heading across the sea to Lombok, and the Gili Islands

From the patchouli-infused spiritual digs of Ubud to traipsing up a volcano in Mt Batur and heading across the sea to Lombok, see the best bits of Bali by bus, boat, bike and, errr, foot. Cycle through rice paddies, snorkel over reefs, splash about in waterfalls, snap a few sunsets, strike some asanas, hike up mountains and throw down beers.

Why you'll love this trip

  • Float in the ocean, bake on the beach, don't go chasing waterfalls (actually do) and conquer a volcano - like you do. The island landscapes of Bali and Lombok are epic!

  • Make like a sponge and soak up every drop of Ubud's relaxed atmosphere. A walk among the bright green rice fields is as Bali as it gets

  • There's nothing like waking up at three in the morning to climb a mountain, eh? The active volcano of Mount Batur is worth every minute of sleep you lose

  • This sentence will have you feeling Gili T. Sorry. Three nights in this island paradise is the perfect way to wind up a trip of a lifetime

Is this trip right for you?

  • Bali and Lombok can be extremely hot and humid. It’s important to prepare for hot sticky temperatures during the day and sometimes cooler climates in the evening. Layers are the best way to tackle this disparity in weather.

  • On Day 5 there's a steep uphill climb of Mount Batur, starting very early in the morning at 3 am. The climb takes around two hours and requires a good level of fitness.

  • On Day 7 there will be approximately 5 hours of travelling including a 1.5 hour fast boat to Lombok, and approximately 3 hours of driving to Tetebatu. The scenery is amazing and this is a great chance to get to know your fellow travellers.

  • This trip affords lots of free time so that you're able to experience Bali and Lombok the way you imagined. If you're in need of optional activities, your leader will be on hand to help.

Itinerary

Welcome to Ubud, Bali. You're free to arrive whenever you like today, as there's nothing planned until your welcome meeting this evening. Meet your local leader and fellow travellers tonight for a pre-trip brief, which should take place around 6pm. Please look for a note in the lobby of the accommodation or ask reception where it will take place. We'll be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so ensure you bring these details to provide to your leader.

Pay a visit to Gitgit Waterfalls, where you have the option of splashing about. The drive is super picturesque and takes you over the highlands that divide the north coast from the south (approximately 6 hours including stops). As Lovina is famous for it's black sand beaches and dolphins that patrol its coast, take an evening stroll down the beach and catch the last of the sun.

Today is free to explore, with plenty of free time to get under the skin of Lovina. Isn’t it nice that the sunset here coincides with happy hour at most places? And as far as sunsets go, this one is pretty good. We recommend getting yourself a cocktail, stat.

  • Lovina - Yoga class - IDR120000
  • Snorkelling in Manjangan National Park - IDR1075000

Travel to Kintamani (approximately 3 hours), the town close to the active volcano of Mount Batur. There'll be a fair bit of staring out of the window along the way, perfect fodder for a cracking game of 'I Spy'. Train your little eye the volcano's spectacular crater and its lake. There'll be plenty of time to stop to stretch the legs and check out the top notch viewpoints of the big erupter.

Rise and shine early birds (3am!), it's time for a good ol' fashioned crater hike. On your included walk, you'll be just in time to witness the sunrise over the valleys of Bali. At 1,717 metres high, Mount Batur sits inside a spectacular caldera along with Lake Batur, which is an awesome sight to see. The lake supports the local fishing industry, while many of the villagers work as guides for the volcano climb. It's important to note that this climb takes around one and a half to two hours, but it's all uphill so a decent level of fitness is required. On a clear morning, it's possible to see all the way across the Lombok Strait to the peaks of Lombok's Mt. Rinjani. The weather can be unpredictable, so the view is up to Mother Nature. After descending the volcano, there may be an option to soak in hot springs with great views over the lake and caldera. Later in the afternoon, head down the the southwest coast to beachside Candidasa. You're gonna love having a free evening after today's climb to get super chilled by the beach.

Special Information
The summit trail starts more easily, while heading to the crater it climbs steeply with switchbacks over volcanic rocks and gravel. A good level of fitness is required. The path can be slippery, particularly after rain so good shoes are essential. Please bring your headtorch and a warm layer to wear at the summit.
The climb may be cancelled during heavy rain and unsafe conditions.
This morning, transfer to the port town of Padang Bai and take a fast boat to Lombok (approximately 2 hours). The scenery is really different from Bali and the people are mainly Muslim rather than Hindu, so Lombok is a real contrast to what you've just experienced. Stop for lunch with the locals at Puyung Village. From here, take a bus ride to Tetebatu, which can take between three and four hours. The hill retreat of Tetebatu, which sits in the centre of Lombok and at the southern base of Mt. Rinjani, provides spectacular views of the region. Maybe use your free time in the afternoon to take a guided walk to one of the nearby villages. Masbagik is a traditional village where you can witness a pottery demonstration, and Pringasella offers a traditonal weaving village walk and Sasak feast. It's up to you how you spend the rest of your free time here.
