Schoolies. A rite of passage for most Aussie school leavers. Sure, you can join the crowds on the Gold Coast in Queensland for a week of hangovers, walks-of-shame and dirty kebabs (#nojudgement) – but we reckon you deserve something bigger and better.

Why fight for space on the d-floor of a dingy pub when you could dance the night away at a street party in Rio? Who wants a soggy Big Mac when you could eat street food in Bangkok? Why nurse your hangover in a crowded Airbnb when you could get rid of it altogether by zip-lining in Costa Rica?

Get the party started and do Schoolies with Geckos.

Got a particularly cool adventure in mind? Get your mates together and organise a private group trip. That means you can pick one of our existing trips and claim every spot for yourselves, or with our help, create an entirely original trip based on the stuff you like. Here are some of our best Schoolies trip ideas (if we do say so ourselves)…

Beaches in Rio de Janeiro

Party in Rio de Janeiro

Shimmy into Rio for some Brazilian beats and beaches. This epic city has the best of both worlds – take a tramcar up the mountainous hillside for some wicked views and then head back down to the coast for a stunning sunset and some of the world’s best nightlife. Nothing beats getting down in a Samba club in Lapa with a caipriniha in hand.

Snorkeling in Thailand

Go sailing in Thailand

Is there anything cooler than chartering a private yacht with your mates to ring in the end of your high school career? Picture this: your trusty captain and local leader are there to get you safely from one stunning island to the next, and if you’re feeling a bit fragile after a few too many Singha beers, you can simply kick back on the deck and relax. Total Schoolies heaven!

Conquer mountains in Nepal

Climb a mountain in Nepal

Feel like tackling another big challenge after exams? Get a group together to conquer a mountain. Maybe Everest Base Camp takes your fancy? Yes, it may take it out of you, but nothing compares to the taste of that well-earned beer after a day conquering part of the world’s tallest mountain. You’ll have the best Schoolies story going around afterwards, guaranteed.

Taste street food in Bali

Take in the sites of Bali

If you’re keen to head OS but not too far afield, Bali is the perfect Schoolies destination. Who doesn’t want to flop on the beach with a cheap cocktail, or burn off some energy cycling through rice paddies and snorkelling around the Gili Islands? Plus, think of the jealousy-inducing Insta snaps of waterfalls, beach club parties and unreal sunsets.

If organising a holiday with your friends is like figuring out how an ATAR score is calculated, you can always join one of our existing small-group trips. That means you’ll get to meet a whole bunch of awesome new people aged between 18 – 29, while you discover some of the world’s hottest destinations.

Eat out in Vietnam

Your crew

Whether you want to party exclusively with your school mates, or would rather ditch everyone at home and set off on your own adventure, you’ll be surrounded by a great crew. Our private groups team can help you build an adventure just for your group, or you can join an existing small-group trip and make new, awesome friends.

Get around with a local leader

Local legends

Our leaders are deadset legends. They’re born in the countries you visit (but all speak English), and have the inside scoops on the coolest places to see, go and eat. It’s not like school camp – they won’t tell you what to do – they’ll just use their local connections to make sure you have a great time.

Visit Guatemala's markets

Freedom to run wild

We know you’re sick of being bossed around by your teachers, so on a Geckos trip you get plenty of free time to run wild on your terms (and on your budget). Pick and choose the stuff you want to do, and if you’re at a loose end, your local leader will have heaps of sweet ideas.

FAQ for Parents

Geckos is part of the Intrepid Group – a global family of adventure travel brands. For more than 25 years, we’ve specialised in creating authentic small-group adventures. We have a commitment to having a purpose beyond profit: supporting local economies and people of destinations we visit, carbon-offsetting our trips and respecting local cultures.

The safety of our passengers, leaders and operators is a major priority of Geckos. We monitor world events very closely and make alterations or cancellations to trips based on informed advice from a number of government sources and our employees in a destination.

We use local leaders who were born and raised in the region you’re travelling in. They are highly trained, well-informed and English-speaking, with a great knowledge of their homeland, which enables them to show our travellers things that tourists normally miss out on.

Alcohol is not generally provided by Geckos on any of our trips. Travellers can purchase alcohol at their own discretion. We recommend travellers check minimum drinking age requirements and local laws in destinations before consuming alcohol.

Unfortunately, Geckos tours have a minimum age requirement of 18 years of age.

If you wish to speak to one of our travel experts you can call us on 1300 854 444 or contact us online.
