Honduras is one cool cat. Here’s 10 reasons why.
1. BANANA REPUBLIC
This term was first used in relation to Honduras’ reliance on banana exports.
2. FOOTBALL WAR
Honduras had a 100-hour war with El Salvador, over soccer. There may have been some other economic stuff going as well, but the important thing to remember is; soccer.
3. SMELLS FISHY
In Yoro every year they have at least one storm that rains down fish.
Honduras has the second largest coral reef in the world, after the Great Barrier Reef.
The name translates to “Great depths.” Which allegedly what Columbus said when he landed. “Thank God we are out of these great depths.”
6. TALE OF TWO CITIES
The capital is actually two cities, Comayagüela and Tegucigalpa.
7. NO SMOKE
Honduras was the first country to ban smoking in your own home. Smokers must always stand 6 feet away from non-smokers.
Local buses are called Chicken buses. They’re brightly painted and look like a party on wheels. You’re unlikely to see chickens on these buses.
It’s not unusual to find Hondurans with blonde hair and blue eyes on the islands. They’re descendants of pirates.
10. SWEET 15
Turning 15 is a big deal for Honduran girls and they usually have a huge party with all their friends.
