There’s more to Zimbabwe than the Victoria Falls (though they are seriously awesome). Here are 10 more awesome things.
1. TUMMY TIME
Stop doing your ab crunches because a big stomach is a sign of wealth.
2. GOLDEN GIRL
Zimbabwe won 3 medals in the 2004 Olympics. All by Kirsty Coventry.
In 2003 one Zimbabwe dollar could be exchanged for one US dollar. By 2007 it took 30,000 Zimbabwean dollars.
Around half the population follow Syncretics which is a mix of Christian and traditional beliefs. Think of it as Jesus hanging out with your spiritual ancestors.
5. GOOD READERS
90% of Zimbabweans are literate, which is the highest literacy rate in Africa.
A lion’s roar can be heard from 8 km away. Your heart thumping can be heard by the person next to you.
7. LIGHTING UP
There is a law requiring headlights to be used between 5.30pm and 5.30am no matter what the visibility.
8. ROCK HARD
The word “Zimbabwe” translates to “House of stone”.
Zimbabwe has some of the largest platinum and diamond reserves in the world. While that might sound nice and pretty, there have been serious human rights concerns about mining practices.
10. SAFETY FIRST
Passengers in the front of the car are required to wear seat belts. The six people piled into the back are not.
