24 hours in Roatan Island

Read time: a bit over 1 minute

We’re not going to kid you. Spending time on Roatan Island is all about indulging. Indulging in sleep, indulging in laziness, indulging in food and indulging in some of the best beaches on earth. If being a lounge lizard isn’t your thing, you’re more than welcome to try out some of the active stuff, but at the end of the day Roatan is the place to be still, drink a beer and enjoy the view. If we had 24 hours of Caribbean sunshine to enjoy, this is what we’d do.

8am Breakfast island-style involves pineapple juice, fried eggs and refried beans. We also recommend the banana pancakes. Wash down with a coffee from some local beans.

10am Do the active stuff early before the day gets too hot and you fall asleep on the beach. Hire a bicycle or scooter and head into the interior. It’s hilly and jungle-y so you know you must be in the tropics.

12noon Siesta. Shhh.

2pm Head off shore to some of the world’s best snorkelling and diving. The colours under the water need to be seen to be believed.

4pm Visit the Institute for Marine Science to snorkel with dolphins. Uh-mazing.

6pm Sunset, beer, sand, perfection. Contemplate staying another 24 hours.

8pm Chow down on fresh seafood like coconut prawns, lobster tails or conch chowder.

10pm Enjoy the nightlife. The locals love having a good time and before you can say, “I don’t know how to dance” they’ll have you dancing like a pro.
