Germany is not famous for its facts but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have any. Germany actually has lots of facts. Here are 10 of our favourites.
1. THREE CHEERS FOR BEERS
Germans consume the second largest quantity of beer in the world. The Irish win this one, of course.
2.THREE MORE CHEERS FOR BEERS
In Bavaria, beer is considered a food.
3. BREAD, GLORIOUS BREAD
There are 300 varieties of bread in Germany. If you try 20 varieties a day, you will have tasted them all in just two weeks.
4. BREAD MUSEUM, GLORIOUS BREAD MUSEUM
There is also a bread museum, located in South Lower Saxony. Good.
We can thank those German guys for daylight savings and the subsequent picnics we enjoy at 9pm in summer. They were the first to make it happen back in 1916. Genius.
6. ADOLF HITLER, BY HUGO BOSS
The uniforms of the Nazi Party and Hitler Youth were designed by Hugo Boss. We’ll just leave that one with you.
7. GETTING THEIR WORDS’ WORTH
This is the longest German word on record: Donaudampfschifffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft (a combination of words, roughly translated to: “Company for subordinated state employees for the main control office for electricity constructions/building for Danube Steamboat shipping”). That is 79 letters. One requires exactly three litres of beer to pronounce it correctly. Lucky beer is a food.
8.THE BEST OF THE WURST
There are 1000 varieties of sausage in Germany. Take that, bread.
Germany has the largest number of zoos in the world. Of course they do. They’re also pretty into wildlife reserves, aquariums etc.
Germany is also home to over 1200 varieties of cakes and pastries. Take that, sausages.
