Read time: a bit over 1 minute
Ah, Mexico – a place where food and drink collide in a perfect cacophony of delicious chaos. This place is the stuff of beans. We mean, uh, dreams. Travelling through Mexico, you’ll begin to see a certain theme occurring. That theme will usually involve street side tacos and sipping mescal. And if it doesn’t, you’re doing it wrong.
1. KEEP IT OG
Mexico’s official name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos, which means ‘United Mexican States’
2. DON’T BE AN ASS
In 2008, Mexico jailed a donkey for assault and battery after it kicked and injured two men.
3. DESCENDED LANGUAGE
Descendents of the Aztecs speak a language called Nahuatl. Some words from this language, mostly for types of food, made their way into the English language, such as avocados (ahuacatl), chocolate, (choholatl) and tomatoes (tomatl).
4. VOLCANO MAMMALS
The Mexican volcano rabbit is endemic to Mexico and lives on volcanoes. It is tiny, and the second smallest rabbit in the world after the pygmy rabbit. It’s also endangered, so leave them alone.
The Aztecs played a ball game known as tlachtli. Sure, it sounds fun, but the losers would be sacrificed to the gods, which isn’t so fun.
6. SI SENOR
Mexico is home to more Spanish-speaking people than any other country in the world. Yes, even Spain.
7. YOU LOOK RADISHING
Oaxaca has a festival to celebrate radishes every December.
8. SCORPION RISING
Roughly 1000 people die in Mexico from scorpion stings every year. Do not pet the scorpions.
9. NAMING RIGHTS

10. AGAVE WORM TACOS
These worms live on the plants that are used to make mezcal – one of Mexico’s traditional spirits. You can buy tacos with these worms in them. They taste a bit like bacon, but squishier.
