Russia‘s recent moves in the Ukraine have meant the nation has been in the news quite a lot lately. Here’ some stuff that probably hasn’t been in the news. Maybe these’ll help you better understand this massive and enigmatic Eurasian country, maybe not. We tried.
1. SCARY SQUIRRELS
In Russia, some squirrels have been known to hunt dogs. Better not feed those ones.
2. TOTALLY ZAPOI’D
The Russian word for disappearing for several days and drinking yourself silly is “zapoi”. We thought it was “fired”.
3. MOTHER MASSIVE
Ireland would fit into Russia 209 times. Russia would fit into Ireland no times.
4. OIL OBSESSED
Russia produces 1,000,000 more barrels of oil a day than Saudi Arabia.
5. PUSSY GALORE
The Hermitage has a team of patrolling cats on the look out for rodents. They have identification passes, and fat bellies.
Russia borders up to 16 countries (depends what you consider a country. Touchy subject.)
Russia spans two continents – Europe and Asia. The continental plates change somewhere in the Ural Mountains. That’s one crack it’s best not to step on.
8. STATUES FOR DAYS
Moscow has a park just for its Soviet statues. Hundreds of Lenins and Stalins stand looking to the distance and pointing at each other.
9. OLD, COLD AND DEEP
Lake Baikal holds 20% of the world’s fresh water. It is also 25 million years old.
Ten percent of the Russian government’s income comes from Vodka sales. Russians drink around 7.7 litres of it a year. Each.
